TV on The Radio has a new album out called “Dear Science” and it is getting rave reviews. I-Tune listeners give it a 4.5 star rating (out of 5) and Rollingstone Magazine gave it a 4 star rating. From what has been written about this album it appears that this band continually redefines itself and many folks are saying there is no other band out today like them. The most popular downloaded song from this album is “Dancing Choose.” From the 30 second preview, it sounds pretty good. I myself need to give them a few more turns and then maybe it will click.

Speaking of Rolling Stone Magazine- did you see who is on the cover this week? That’s right Metallica– (you knew I was going to get them in again on the update) and the article is very cool. Pick it up at a newsstand near you.

I am so bummed I missed Weezer at the Garden this week- I heard the show was top notch- Have you picked up the Red album yet? What are you waiting for? “The Angel and The One” is such a phenomenal song. Buy it now!!!

Did you hear the nice story of how the band, Rush, made someone’s wish come true. With the help of the Make A Wish Foundation, a 16-year old girl from Georgia who has been diagnosed with cancer, was able to meet her favorite band, backstage at a July 20 show in Charlotte, N.C. The one song performed “Hope” really touched her and her cancer is now in remission. I applaud the boys from Rush-nice job!!

Been listening a lot to Tom Petty lately and my favorite song of the week is “Ankle Deep” from his Highway Companion CD. This album has pretty much gone un-noticed (but not by his fan base) because there really is no outlet on the radio for this. Funny how things are- you can’t find a way to play greatness on the air but a lot of crap gets airtime.

Chris Cornell is getting a lot of heat for teaming up with the hottest producer these days, Timbaland, and he is putting out a new album, Scream, on Nov. 4. It is a dramatic change for the former lead singer of Soundgarden and Audioslave and the reaction has been vile. Hey calm down already give it a chance. I give him credit for trying something else. He has also co-written David Cook’s first single to be released- “Light On.” It’s his “pop” side. Ease up people.

The Kings of Leon have new album out- “Only By the Night”- and it has received an average rating of 4 stars from I-Tune listeners. “Use Somebody” seems to be the most popular download.

My favorite “old school” song of the week is “I Write The Songs” by Barry Manilow. Yes there I said it- Barry Manilow. Now don’t give me any grief- you know there is at least one song by him that you love. I actually have many of his songs in my music library and am not ashamed to admit it. This guy has his place in music history and it can’t be denied.

My other “old school” song of the week is the freaking phenomenal “I’m Your Captain/Closer to Home” by Grand Funk Railroad. My boys run out of the room when they hear it because they can not stand how long the song is but I love it, especially the sound of the ocean and the way it slows down. “Am I in my cabin dreaming…” C’mon top this song? “I’m getting closer to my home…” Very underrated band and it annoys me to no end. These guys in their prime were “the bomb.”

Akon has a new single “Right Now (Na Na Na) and I have to say I like it. Should be a hit real soon.

Kenny Chesney has released a new single “Nowhere to Go, Nowhere to Be” and I like this one as well.

Kayne West is taking a lot of criticism from I-Tune listeners on the release of his new single “Love Lockdown.” It has only received an average rating of 3.5 stars from almost 2,000 reviews. Not good for the self proclaimed best rapper out today.

“Do What You Do” is the hard rocking single released by Mudvayne this week. Sounds real good, check it out!!

Ok this week’s I-Tune shuffle landed on “Another Rainy Night (Without You)” by Queensryche from their 1990 release of “Empire.” So you know I had to go back and listen to the whole album and what a classic it is. Now I know many Queensryche fans will state that “Operation Mindcrime” is their best and I acknowledge the greatness of that album but for me- “Empire” is my favorite of the boys from Bellvue, Washington. Don’t kid yourself about this band- they have sold over 20 million albums worldwide, including over 11 million in the U.S. Now Empire was their fifth studio album and sold over 3 million in the U.S.- aided by the ballad “Silent Lucidity” which was backed by a full orchestra.

Empire starts off with “Best I Can” and I remember when I first heard this song- I was immediately hooked. Now I know for some out there- Geoff Tate’s vocals may be an acquired taste- but again for me he shines brightly on this song and the whole album for that matter. The song was written by the now departed Chris DeGarmo, lead guitarist, and it has his style all over it. It is a driving song that is kept rolling along by the drumming of Scott Rockenfield (how cool is his last name?). Track # 2 is the great “Thin Line.”“Another hungry look in her eyes again… skin tight leather…” This song has it all- soft parts, rocking parts and great vocals. Eddie Jackson’s bass work really stands out on this song. The arrangement on this song is very strong and you will be “air-guitaring” throughout. Track # 3 is one of the more recognizable songs that they have ever done- “Jet City Woman” – c’mon you can’t tell me you don’t like this song? It’s blasting right now and you guessed it- my wife is telling me to turn it down. “Waiting so long I can’t wait another day without you…” I love it when Tate screeches “all along thinking about you..” Listen to this song with a good set of headphones and you will be off on a cloud. Again the arrangement is so good on this song; it compliments Tate’s vocal range. Three songs and 15 minutes go by in a breeze and then it’s on to the aforementioned “Rainy Night.” This album is full of songs that are soft and then gradually builds into a powerful force of sound. This song is the epitomy of what I am talking about. You won’t be able to get the chorus out of your head “I’m all alone and its another rainy night without you…” Side 1 ends with the title track and this song rocks!! This band is known for its socially conscious lyrics and on this song it speaks to how much money the U.S. government spent on space exploration as opposed to putting the money to law enforcement. “Can you feel it calling.. EMPIRE!!..”

Side two starts off with another hard charging song- “Resistance” and this is one of my favorites on the disc. Take a listen to the guitar solo on this song, it is really good and again you will not be able to get the chorus out of your head. This is a perfect song when you are traveling in your car- you know those driving songs, right? Then, the often-criticized “Silent Lucidity” begins and I have to tell you I could never understand why so many do not like this song. Every time I hear the song, I stop what I’m doing and just listen. The arrangement is beautiful and Tate’s vocals blend in perfectly. Hey it was the late 1980’s and every rock band had a ballad, so why all the grief for them on this song? I like it, always have-always will. Track # 3 on side two is my favorite track-“Hand on Heart”- and again Eddie’s bass work shines through. I have always pictured myself being up on stage lip-synching this song as I wish I could sing the song the way Geoff does. His passion bleeds through on this song and the guitar solo is the icing on the cake. “One and Only” is a progessive song that changes styles throughout. The album ends with the epic journey- “Anybody Listening?” Listen to the lyrics-very deep- and if I had to pick a song that symbolizes this band- this is it. The song has many soft parts that ascend into a solid wall of sound.

This album is not “metal” by any means- that is how it is listed on I-Tunes, please do not be scared to give this album a chance. There are some heavy parts but overall this is a sing-along album and something you will find yourself playing over and over again-like I did. These guys don’t get the credit that they deserve- you don’t sell 20 million records- and not have a fan base. They are still going strong today and will be at a theater near you in the near future. I know my brother will be there as this band has to rank in his top 10 bands of all time. Rock on people!!!

If you were born on this day you share a birthday with Olivia Newton John.

Back on this day in 1970, Motown Records announced that in just nine months their new act, The Jackson 5, had sold 10 million records.

And sadly back on this day in 2003, Robert Palmer passed away at the very young age of 54. I know you have something from him in your music library, how can you not?

Buddy Guy’s new album “Skin Deep” was released this past Tuesday and the 30 second samples on I-Tunes sound great. This is his first recorded album with all original tunes. He gets help from Susan Tedeschi on “Too Many Tears.” Also contributing to the album are Eric Clapton, Robert Randolph and Derek Trucks. If you have never seen Guy in concert, you are so missing out.

One Day as a Lion, the new band with Zach De La Rocha and Jon Theodore (drummer from Mars Volta) put out an EP of 4 songs. If you were a fan of Rage, you will definitely enjoy it. “Wild International” sounds great.

Rush has released a never heard before version of “Working Man” due to popular demand as a result of the song being released on the “Rock Band” video game a few weeks back. Check out this video on You Tube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAKhEzdSYPI

The Rolling Stones are suing rapper Lil Wayne for his song “Playing with Fire.” The Stones reps say it’s a clear derivative of their song with the same title and he used it without their permission.

Have you ever been put on the spot to name your top 25 music acts of all-time? Album review: “It’s Time for a Love Revolution” – Lenny Kravitz released Feb. 5, 2008:  Fantastic; Instant Classic; His Best Work Ever; I wish the World would follow his Words; Lenny for President!! Do you think I like this CD? You need to run out and purchase this album immediately!!

It has everything- groove, heart, soul, electric guitars, sitars and piano. And he even plays the drums. It’s hard and soft. It’s fast and slow. The best thing about this CD is his positive message of peace and love. “If You Want It” states that you (we together) can change the world. Such a great song and I love the “gospel” type background vocals towards the end of the song- a nice touch.

The album starts off with a kick with “Love Revolution” and then goes into the Zep like “Bring It On” (put this one on in your car and crank it up). The third track definitely has a Beatle influence with “Good Morning” (perfect wake up song for those who need an alarm clock)  a bluesy rock song. “Love, Love, Love” has a Chili Pepper feel to it and with the lyrics “There ain’t nothing you can give me I’m already there, I got love”- how can you beat that?

Like many of his other CD’s, he writes beautiful slow songs. Right about the time his last CD, “Baptism” came out- my mother had passed away and he wrote a song for his mother (whom also passed away) called “Calling All Angels” and although its a tough song for me to listen to- I feel the connection. On this album, he writes a song for his dad-whom just passed away- “A Long and Sad Goodbye.” For the majority of Lenny’s life he did not speak to his father but they mended fences right around the time he was sick and before he died. Just listen to the lyrics.

I think my favorite song is “Will You Marry Me” (tough to pick because there are so many to choose from). Again his lyrics are solid- “You are my life and passion and that never goes out of fashion”- that’s the way I feel about my wife!!!

Throughout, there are songs for wanting the war to end. “I Want to Go Home” is just phenomenal. Heartfelt pain for the men & women over in Iraq. “When I take a Life, does that make peace?”- Powerful words. “I’ll Be Waiting” is also another cool song.

This man has passion-so much of it- that it pours off his heart. If you don’t like this album- I’ll reimburse you the money for it……

This week on my I-POD shuffle I came across Dusty Springfield. Wow-this woman had such a great voice and her songs will last forever. Such a shame the world lost her in 1999 to breast cancer. Pick up her greatest hits or “Dusty in Memphis.”  “You Don’t Have to say you love Me” is right up there for me as an all-time favorite. Remember keep the classics going- play them around your kids so they know!! Pound it into them.

By the way, how cool was Tom Petty at half-time of the Superbowl?

Twisted Sister and Stryper will be participating in a benefit concert to mark the upcoming fifth anniversary of The Station nightclub fire in Rhode Island that killed 100 people.Twisted Singer frontman Dee Snider will serve as host of the event, which will raise money for The Station Family Fund, a nonprofit group that assists survivors with the costs of rehabilitation and treatment. More than 200 people were injured in the blaze and many continue to require medical care. The concert will feature an eclectic lineup, including several country artists. Snider says the members of Great White continue to be devastated by the tragedy, and that the band would perform at the concert in a heartbeat, but emotions are still too raw — “I just can’t let them near it,” Snider said. The benefit concert is set for February 25th at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, five days after the 5th anniversary of the fire.

Back on this day in 1969 Blind Faith formed after Traffic and Cream parted ways. Clapton, Winwood along with Rick Grech and Ginger Baker made one album and parted before 1969 ended. Clapton and Winwood are reunited at the end of this month at the Garden. “Well Alright”!!!

Grammy’s this Sunday!!

I was driving home the other night and the greatest rock station I mentioned to year a couple of weeks ago, WCCC 106.9 out of Hartford and every week night they play “the ’80’s at 8:00” and “the ’90’s at 9:00” and I caught the ’80’s. Well they took me back to bands I had forgotten about but still made an impact for me two decades ago. Of course they started off with Tesla but you already know how I feel about them. But the next few tunes were from Zebra “Whose Behind the Door” from their 1982 debut album. Randy Jackson, lead singer has always been compared to Robert Plant and actually is touring across the states with various orchestras doing Zeppelin music. Check out the web site.

Keeping with finding old music I had to purchase Rod Stewart‘s “Foot Loose and Fancy Free” CD (I-Tunes does not carry it) and again I had forgotten how friggin’ great this album is. Carmine Appice is the drummer for this album and check out his work on “Born Loose”- hard to find a better rock and roll song. And my two favorite songs on the album is Stewart’s cover of The Supreme’s “You Keep Me Hanging On”- absolutely love the intro to that song and “I Was Only Joking” – Just thinking about it now- “I was only joking” is in my top 5 songs of all time- there I said it. Of course the great “Hot Legs” is on this album- one of my mother’s all time favorites and I will never forget her dancing at my wedding to that song.

Lenny Kravitz will be all over television in the coming week to promote his new album, “It Is Time For A Love Revolution.” The vocalist will film a piece for CBS Sunday Morning February 3rd. (my new favorite show) The following day, he’ll walk on the set of MTV’s TRL to promote the album. Kravitz will tape an appearance for The Late Show With David Letterman on February 5th (it will air Feb. 8), then visit ABC’s Good Morning America the following day. His week concludes with a February 7th stop at TV’s Regis & Kelly. Lenny fans can also catch his new clip, “I’ll Be Waiting,” which recently made its way to video outlets. Kravitz’s “It Is Time For A Love Revolution” arrives February 5th. And of course Cindy and I are going to see him tonight at the Hammerstein!!! By the way Rolling Stone gave his new CD three stars. My review will come next week after I get it Tuesday.

Back on this day in 1964, seventy-three million people tuned into the Ed Sullivan show to catch a glimpse of a new band called the Beatles.Back on this day in 1968 Fleetwood Mac released its debut album and then same day in 1977 “Rumours” begins its trek to the top of the charts.

On this day back in 1992, Elton John and George Michael teamed up to score a US number one with a song recorded live at Wembley Stadium the previous March, “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me”. Elton had originally released the song on his “Caribou” album in 1974.

Ok, my absolute favorite new song of the week is “Guitar Slinger” by a new Country band called Crossin Dixon. Come on now-check it out at http://www.cmt.com/videos/crossin-dixon/157151/guitar-slinger.jhtml I-Tunes sells the song and the video. You can not tell me that you don’t like this song. Listen to the vocals, perfect harmonies. I’m really getting into Country music, I don’t know what the heck is going on.

Speaking of rock turning country, the Red rocker, Sammy Hagar will kick off a tour in May with country stars Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban and others. Come on, tell me you don’t like “I Can’t Drive 55?”… you can’t.

And just to keep it going with the same vibe, Tim McGraw has wrote a song with Def Leppard, “Nine Lives” which will be on Leppard’s new CD “Sparkle Lounge” to hit on Mar. 18.

And now to get even more diverse I picked up a Jazz CD called “Sides of Blue” featuring Wynton Kelly, John Coltrane and The Bill Evans Trio. I absolutely love it. Perfect CD if you are entertaining folks at a dinner party. Very bluesy type of jazz. Very cool CD and I recommend it highly.

Lenny Kravitz new single “Bring it On” is straight out of the Led Zeppelin song book. Listen to this song and tell me it doesn’t sound like something Zeppelin did 30 years ago. Lenny is the man. Can not wait to see him next Friday at the Hammerstein. He’s all about peace and love and if you have not seen one of his shows- you are missing out. Man has lots of talent.

Sheryl Crow’s new single “Love is Free” is a catchy pop tune and I’d give it a thumbs up. Her new CD “Detours” is out on Feb. 5th.

The Police generated $142 million dollars in 2007 and sit on top of the Forbes list of top album and concert sales. Van Halen came in 9th with $63.8 million. (but we all know who put on a better show- no offense to the Police fans).

Back on this day in 1962, Sam Cooke released his infectious single- “Twistin’ the Night Away.” The song soon made number 9, and became Cooke’s third top 10 hit. Again Mr. Cooke is my all time favorite singer.

Today is Etta James birthday, she turns 70.
